Useful Information for Year 6

Reading Books

Reading books come home weekly. Children will complete fluency books, before moving on to free selection from our library. Please ensure children bring their reading books to school every day, and that home reading is recorded in their reading record.

Seesaw

At Headlands, we use the Seesaw App to communicate with parents. Seesaw is a  secure online journal where we can share what your children are learning in class. You can find out more information and a link to download the app here.

PE

PE is on Tuesdays and Thursdays. PE is indoors on a Tuesday and outdoors on a Thursday. Please ensure that children come to school in their correct PE kit. Longer hair should be tied up, and any earrings should be removed. Thank you for your support!

Homework & Spellings

  • Daily reading at home
  • Times Table Rockstars (5 minutes per day)
  • Spelling Shed (practise 3 times per week)

In Year 6 children are preparing to complete their SATs, and to support with their preparation for this, additional maths and English homework will be sent home for completion. In addition, Year 6 teachers may invite your child to an after school booster. Please try to support in this as much as possible, as it will make a huge difference to your child and their outcomes.

Learning in Year 6

In Year 6, we have a real focus on preparing children for their next steps while supporting them to master their primary learning. One aspect of Year 6 is SATS which take place in May each year – please avoid booking any holidays at the time of year as it is essential that your child completes their assessments. We work with the children throughout the year to ensure they feel well supported in their preparation. Day to day, the children won’t feel much different as the team are so skilled in supporting them and will be well prepared for Year 6 as they move through school.

Reading – children increase their reading pace as they will be required to read three texts in their reading test. Our comprehension lessons focus on retrieval and inference (finding meaning), prediction and summary. Vocabulary is taught within lessons. We explore a diverse range of texts which are selected and agreed upon by our English Lead to ensure a progressive curriculum is in place. As children approach SATS, they will be guided to develop more strategic reading and we give them lots of ways to feel confident in approaching unfamiliar texts. Some of the inspirational class texts include: Holes by Louis Sacher, Wonder by R J Palachio and Tyger by SF Said.

In writing, children will develop more robust approaches to their independence and they will write increasingly sophisticated writing. They will explore increased focus on authorly choice as they widen the number of writing tools. In addition, children will learn more about speech to advance narrative in writing and develop more varied sentences and tense forms.

In Maths, children will continue to practise their times tables so that they can apply them to more challenging problems and work beyond 12×12. Please support your child to use times table rockstars at home at least three times per week. New concepts such as ratio, algebra are introduced in Year 6.

Here is a sneak peek at some of the amazing units of work that will be explored;

  • History – World War Two
  • Geography – Biomes and climate
  • Science – evolution
  • DT – self-driving cars
  • Art – Picasso style self portraits
