Useful Information for Year 3

Reading Books

Reading books come home weekly. Children will complete fluency books, before moving on to free selection from our library. Please ensure children bring their reading books to school every day, and that home reading is recorded in their reading record.

Seesaw

At Headlands, we use the Seesaw App to communicate with parents. Seesaw is a  secure online journal where we can share what your children are learning in class. You can find out more information and a link to download the app here.

PE

PE is on Tuesdays and Thursdays. PE is outdoors on a Tuesday and indoors on a Thursday. Please ensure that children come to school in their correct PE kit. Longer hair should be tied up, and any earrings should be removed. Thank you for your support!

Homework & Spellings

  • Daily reading at home
  • Times Table Rockstars (5 minutes per day)
  • Spelling Shed (practise 3 times per week)

Learning in Year 3

In Year 3, children develop their formal learning skills further as they begin to explore exciting topics in the wider curriculum!

Moving on from phonics, children in Year 3 develop further fluency in our whole class reading lessons. Here we focus on accuracy, pace, flow and emphasis. Children are taught how to read longer texts well. Our comprehension lessons focus on retrieval and inference (finding meaning) as well as some early prediction work. We explore a diverse range of texts which are selected and agreed upon by our English Lead to ensure a progressive curriculum is in place.

In writing, children will learn to develop more complex sentences and develop more flow in their writing. They will explore different word classes, conjunctions (and, because, but, so and others), describing how using adverbs and carefully selected adjectives to describe nouns. They will explore exciting books such as George’s Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl, The Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo and The Iron Man by Ted Hughes.

In Maths, times tables are a real focus. Children will build on 2, 5 and 10 times tables by learning their 3, 6, 4 and 8 times tables. Please support your child to use times table rockstars at home at least three times per week.

Here is a sneak peek at just some of the amazing units of work that will be explored;
• History – The Stone Age
• Geography – Rivers and bodies of water
• Science – The human body
• DT – sewing
• Art – painting using watercolour
