Useful Information for Nursery

Reading Books

Please bring in your reading books on a Thursday, and you will be sent home with new ones on a Friday. The phonics books that come home will match with teaching in our classroom, so children can practise what they are learning with you alongside this.

Seesaw

At Headlands, we use the Seesaw App to communicate with parents. Seesaw is a  secure online journal where we can share what your children are learning in class. You can find out more information and a link to download the app here.

PE

Our Blossom class has Forest School on a Monday and PE on a Thursday. Please ensure that children come to school in their correct PE kit. Longer hair should be tied up. Thank you for your support!

Home Learning

  • Please read your child’s reading book with them three times per week
  • Practise with grapheme cards and tricky words daily
  • Share a book as a bedtime story every day. You can borrow from the EYFS lending library on a ongoing basis (available before and after school each day).

Learning in Nursery

In Nursery, children come to school and engage with diverse and balanced learning. Our children spend lots of time developing gross and fine motor skills, develop balance and coordination, engage with imaginative role play and explore art and craft. The children are offered activities that centre on life skills that build on their life experience. We believe in the developing the whole child, and our new facilities are purpose built to support this vision. We want each unique child to be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured. The curriculum is designed by our Early Years Lead Mrs Green alongside the wider team and under supervision from our senior leadership team – this means that the journey the children start in Nursery will continue to be built upon if you choose Headlands as your child’s school.

The prime areas of learning and development are;

  • Communication and language
  • Physical development
  • Personal, social and emotional development

The specific areas of development, which support the prime areas are;

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

Our friendly and dedicated Nursery team are led by Mrs Wilby our qualified Nursery Nurse and supported by our EYFS teachers to ensure that your children get the best possible start in life. Because our nursery children share the outdoor area with reception children, they develop friendships both within and across peer groups and will find the transition to our lovely Reception unit a familiar step. We find that our nursery children settle very quickly in reception and are ready for their next steps much more quickly because of the groundwork put in during their nursery days.
