What is a Governing Body?
The governing board has a range of duties and powers and a general responsibility for the conduct of the school with a view to promoting the best development of children – academically, emotionally and socially. The three key areas of responsibility are:
- Setting the school vision and strategy
- Supporting and challenging the Headteacher – including setting their objectives and ensuring they are met
- Overseeing the school finance
More specifically governors support the process of setting an improvement plan and then conduct visits and check data to ensure the school is delivering planned improvements. Schools are expected to be aware of their own strengths and weaknesses and governors also ensure that the school maintains an accurate self-evaluation. This will include challenge based on pupil performance data (both attainment and progress) as well as other educational evidence the governors obtain. Governors also monitor pupil wellbeing through attendance data, pupil surveys and visits. In a Church of England school such as Headlands, governors are responsible for ensuring the Christian Distinctiveness of the school is promoted and the ethos and values of the school are maintained.
Governors have no operational, day-to-day responsibility for the school. The Headteacher has responsibility for delivering every aspect of education and support to the pupils. Governors help set the vision, the Headteacher and school staff deliver it.

Meet Our Governors

Hello, I’m Laura and I have been a governor since October 2023, although I have been a part of the school community since 2018 when my daughter entered reception. I became a governor to support the school in giving our children the best chance to succeed in the future as well as creating great memories during their school life.
I currently work part time for a mental health charity as a housing administrator where I cover all aspects of admin as well as leading on recruitment for the team. In the past I have worked in politics and the hotel industry leading teams, handling complaints, performance management and team working. With this experience I believe my wide range of skills will be beneficial to the school and governing body.
In my current job I am enjoying having the time to come into school more and to work hard in this challenging and rewarding role as a Governor. I feel very privileged to be a parent governor at Headlands.
I have been involved in school governance for nearly 20 years, originally as a Parent Governor when my daughter started school back in 2004. During my time as a Governor I was Chair of Governors for 5 years. For the last 3 years I have been a Governing Body Clerk to 6 schools including Headlands.
I work in a maintained school in Huddersfield as the School Business Manager, a role I love. This gives me lots of practical experience and understanding to bring to the table. Finance, premises management, health and safety, policies and HR are some of my well-developed skills.
I live in Mirfield and have an affinity with Headlands School as it was my first role working in a school back in 2012 when I decided to leave my role as a Bank Manager and work in a school setting.

As a dedicated Governor at Headlands School, from November 2023, I am honoured to contribute to the rich tapestry of education and student development. As a retired Headteacher, I have an extensive career in education and an even earlier profession in the medical industry. With a passion for fostering curiosity, my aim is to support the school’s leadership team in maintaining high educational standards within a well-managed, caring, and safe environment.
Together, we strive to create an atmosphere where every student can flourish academically and personally, preparing them for a bright and successful future.
I have been a school governor since 2017 when I joined as a parent governor at the primary school my children attended and later became a co-opted governor there. In 2023 I joined Headlands Church of England Primary School and I am now a co-opted governor and Chair of the Finance Committee.
Being a school governor is extremely rewarding, knowing that you are providing an important role supporting the school and staff to do their best for the children, parents and carers in the school community. Volunteering as a governor gives me the opportunity to use my skills and experience, and to learn new ones, while doing something that is worthwhile and that has a real impact.
In my free time I like to get outdoors as much as possible. I enjoy running and pottering in the garden, trying to keep on top of the weeds!

My name is Melusi Sibanda and I am originally from Zimbabwe.
I am the Vicar of St James, Heckmondwike and Christ Church, Liversedge and that includes Headlands School.
I enjoy spending time at the school taking part in school assemblies and other events.
I have been a parent governor at Headlands since 2022. My two daughters both attend Headlands; one started in reception and the other joined from nursery. I have lived in the area all my life, and so do both sets of grandparents. I was christened and confirmed at our local church in Liversedge, where I also attended Sunday school.
As a parent, it is incredibly important to me that I support Headlands School to be the best it can be to ensure a good education and a positive learning experience for all the children that live in our community.
As a dietitian by profession, working in mental health, I am particularly focused on the physical and mental health and wellbeing of all the pupils and staff at Headlands.

I’ve been in the teaching profession for 22 years, with the last five of those at Headlands. During my career I have taught internationally as well as in the UK, holding the roles of acting deputy headteacher, leader of EYFS and KS1, as well as English and Music leads across schools in the Yorkshire region.
Having left Headlands last year to continue my work in the wider education sector, I am delighted to return to Headlands as a Governor. My particular areas of interest are curriculum development, phonics, the well-being of staff and students and (of course!) music.
Headlands holds a special place in my heart and I can’t wait to continue working with the children and families!

I successfully applied to be a parent governor in early 2025. I have two children currently at school and my youngest is set to join reception this year. I have a strong desire to help and when the position of Governor came up at school, I knew this was an opportunity for me to help in a really relevant and meaningful way.
I am a Specialist Biomedical Scientist and have worked for the NHS since 2006. I currently work part-time, locally at Dewsbury Hospital. During my career, I have become very familiar with the myriad of background work that is necessary in the running of large establishments, such as laboratories in hospitals, and this is transferable to a school setting — certainly in terms of health and safety, risk, change management, performance monitoring, procedural management and leadership. Together with my extensive team working background, I hope my skills can help me to help the school and the wider community during my time as Governor.
I love being a mum, it’s an education in itself! I also love the outdoors, fitness and a good puzzle book (preferably on a sunny beach!).

I have worked at Headlands School since January 2023 and although I have taught all primary age ranges, my passion is for Early Years and making sure each child has the best possible start to their education. I grew up in the north east of England before moving to Bradford to complete my teacher training. I have three children, who all attended Headlands so I have been involved with the school since 2007. When I am not at school, I enjoy reading, gardening and days out with friends and family.
Register of Business Interests
Members of the Governing Body are asked to record any pecuniary interests held either personally or through a company or relative or partner. An ‘interest’ is a situation where a member of the governing body may be affected personally or financially, directly or indirectly, or in some other way by a decision made at a meeting where the governor is present.
