Useful Information for Year 4

Reading Books

Reading books come home weekly. Once your child has completed their fluency books, they will move on to free selection from our library. Please ensure children bring their reading books to school every day, and that home reading is recorded in their reading record.

Seesaw

At Headlands, we use the Seesaw App to communicate with parents. Seesaw is a  secure online journal where we can share what your children are learning in class. You can find out more information and a link to download the app here.

PE

PE is on Wednesdays and Fridays. PE is indoors on a Wednesday and outdoors on a Friday. Please ensure that children come to school in their correct PE kit. Longer hair should be tied up, and any earrings should be removed. Thank you for your support!

Homework & Spellings

  • Daily reading at home
  • Times Table Rockstars (5 minutes per day)
  • Spelling Shed (practise 3 times per week)

Learning in Year 4

In Year 4, children deepen their formal learning skills as they continue to exlore explore exciting topics in the wider curriculum.

Reading – children develop further fluency in our whole class reading lessons. Here we focus on accuracy, pace, flow and emphasis. Children are taught how to read longer texts well. Our comprehension lessons focus on retrieval and inference (finding meaning) as well as some prediction work and early summary. We explore a diverse range of texts which are selected and agreed upon by our English Lead to ensure a progressive curriculum is in place.

They will explore exciting books such as The Firework Maker’s Daughter by Phillip Pullman; The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe by CS Lewis and Varjak Paw by SF Said.

In writing, children will learn to develop more complex sentences and develop more flow in their writing and across paragraphs. They will explore more conjunctions (and, because, but, so, yet, however, therefore). In addition, children will learn more about speech in writing and develop more varied sentences.

In Maths, times tables are a real focus. Children will build on previous years by learning their times tables up to 12 x 12. Please support your child to use times table rockstars at home at least three times per week. At the end of Year 4, children take a test as in phonics to check their times tables knowledge.

Here is a sneak peek at just some of the amazing units of work that will be explored;

  • History – The Roman rule of Britain
  • Geography – How does West Yorkshire compare to California?
  • Science – The digestive system
  • DT – electrical lights
  • Art – watercolour landscapes
