Useful Information for Year 1 & 2
Reading Books
Library books and reading books go home on a Friday and need to be returned on Monday.
Phonics
We follow Little Wandle. It is taught daily and children practise sounds, blend and practise reading words and read tricky words that are words that cannot be sounded out. Children then practise using these sounds and write words with these sounds.
Children complete 3 reads a week and then bring home the book that they have been practising in school.
Seesaw
At Headlands, we use the Seesaw App to communicate with parents. Seesaw is a secure online journal where we can share what your children are learning in class. You can find out more information and a link to download the app here.
PE
Laurel and Beech have their PE lessons on a Monday and Friday. Hawthorn have their PE lessons on a Tuesday and Thursday.
Please ensure that children come to school in their correct PE kit. Longer hair should be tied up, and any earrings should be removed. Thank you for your support!
Home Learning Expectations
Every half term there will be a menu of activities, linked to that curriculum that we would like the children to complete at home. These will be released on Seesaw and be available for the whole half term. Please take pictures of the activities and upload to Seesaw.

Learning in Key Stage 1
We have a mixed Year 1 & 2 cohort split across three classes. When your child moves to KS1, they will be welcomed into their new class by familiar faces. Our Year 2 children are trained to be mentors for the younger children and help them to develop their learning! The children will explore the wider curriculum through continuous provision. This means that children work through subjects such as history, geography, art, science, computing, history and DT through tailored experiences in the classroom. The curriculum is overseen by the phase leader, Mrs Ross and under the supervision of the senior leaders to ensure that there is a clear sequence of learning. Children flourish under this model and build their own lines of enquiry which they are free to deepen if they desire.
Phonics – in KS1, phonics remains a priority, and we pride ourselves on our focus on early reading. The children in Year 1 will take the Phonics Screen Check towards the end of the year and it is vital that they are well supported in school and at home to achieve. For more information on our phonics program, Little Wandle Letter and Sounds, please follow the link to our phonics page.
In English, children will focus on developing accurate handwriting and sentence writing. As they become more confident, they will begin to be more creative in their own writing. We use Talk For Writing in school to promote good confident speakers and passionate writers.
Reading – once children are fluent in phonics they move to a fluency model as well as exploring early comprehension. Children will begin to read fluency books which will come home for reading. We ask children to read regularly at home to support their development. In class, early comprehension work will begin
In maths, children in Key Stage 1 develop confidence with number particularly bonds within 20, addition and subtraction. As children become more confident, they will explore the four operations and learn to reason and problem solve. Children in Year 2 learn their 2, 5 and 10 x tables. These are crucial steps on their learning for Key Stage 2.
In Key Stage 1, children have access to the school “pirate ship” which is a fantastic recent addition to our KS1 playground. This encourages creative, inventive play and supports children to develop their motor skills.
